Our Caterpillar Art Inspired by Eric Carle

The students really wanted to make caterpillars and butterflies because of the new visitors in our classroom. The students painted 3 different papers using different media that made different textures. We had a stamping station using bubble wrap, a dip and dab paint station, a sponge paint station and a water painting station. Once the paint dried, the students traced and cut out circles for their caterpillar's body. The students added a face, legs and spikes to their caterpillars. Don't they look amazing?!

Welcome Caterpillars!

Our class received a mystery package from the office. The box said "FRAGILE" in big, bold, red letters. We made predictions about what was inside. The students thought that it might have been turtles, gerbils or even more fish friends for our pet Bubbles. It turned out that it was caterpillars! The students were so excited and they took turns looking at them under magnifying glasses. After several days, the students noticed that the caterpillars' homes were getting sticky and dirty. They helped to clean them out with q-tips gently. The caterpillars are growing stronger and bigger every day that we are taking care of them!

Save Our Forest!

Previously the students created a beautiful forest in our classroom. Many animals came to live in the beautiful forest. One day, a Construction Man showed up and said "I need more wood to build more houses!" He started to cut down our trees. Some of the animals disappeared because there were no more trees to live in. The class decided to write letters to the Construction Man to convince him to stop. They wrote letters with good reasons for him to stop! When the Construction Man read their letters, he decided to stop and he went away. The students then created and "planted" new trees in our forest!

Garbage in the Kindergarten Playpen and Oceans

During our school's "20 Minute Makeover," the students picked up a lot of garbage in the Kindergarten Playpen.  We put some of the garbage that we found into a bottle with some clean water. We wanted to see what would happen to the water. After a week, the students noticed that the water had gotten very dirty. The students made a connection with the bottled water to our oceans!

Forest Inquiry

The class was wondering about how animals stay safe during Spring time. Our research into different animals led to our Forest Inquiry. The class has now turned our Dramatic Centre into a forest! We have many trees and different animals that are camouflaged in our Forest. Can you spot the many different animals?  The students have also made signs for our Forest to protect the trees and animals!

Inuit Print Making In-School Art Activity

On Thursday April 2, an Art teacher from the Mc Michael Art Gallery came to teach us about print making! It was very fun and our class really enjoyed this activity! First, we took a trip upstairs to the BIG Art room! Up there, we looked at many samples of Inuit Art. Using the samples as inspiration, we drew our pictures. Then we used our pencils to carve our picture into a piece of "scratch foam." When the lines were deep enough, we coloured our pictures using water coloured markers. The teacher put a piece of wet paper over the foam and she used a special tool called a "Brayer" to roll over our Art. The colours on our foam transferred over to the new piece of paper and it created a beautiful print!

CrAzY HaIr DaY and Autism Awareness Day!!!

April 2nd was a very special day at school. We had our "Crazy Hair Day"! A lot of our friends showed up with crazy and fun hairstyles and we took lots of pictures for our yearbook! It was also "Autism Awareness Day"! Many of our friends wore blue to show their support.
